Narrated by Academy Award winners Sissy Spacek and Herbie Hancock, Amazon Gold is the disturbing account of a clandestine journey into the Amazon rainforest. Two journalists, led by a Peruvian biologist, uncover the savage unraveling of pristine rainforest. They bear witness to apocalyptic destruction in the pursuit of mine gold, with global consequence. Presenting surreal images of once extraordinary beauty turned into hellish wasteland, Amazon Gold reaffirms the right of the rainforest to exist as a repository of priceless biodiversity. The Amazon Aid Foundation’s mission is to bring awareness and environmental sustainability to the Amazon rainforest. The Foundation produces multimedia materials to educate the public about the Amazon while assisting partners on the ground who provide solutions to issues such as illegal gold mining and deforestation.
WHY THE AMAZON?
The Amazon helps moderate weather patterns.
Scientists estimate that more than 35% of all species live in the Amazon.
Trees in the Amazon transform nearly 11% of global carbon emissions.
20% of the planet’s fresh water flows through the Amazon.
An important solution for the protection of the Amazon is to avoid deforestation. In keeping with this focus, AAF has developed ACRE+CARE, an innovative platform where each donor can see his/her adopted acre from space. AAF aims to protect 100,000 acres of pristine rainforest in the Peruvian Amazon, one of the densest areas of biodiversity on Earth. Proceeds from the $40-per-acre donation are placed in a fund, and the interest is used for the protection and scientific study of the Madre de Dios region of the Peruvian Amazon.
