Marcus “the Magnificent” Malone received arguably the best possible Christmas gift, and a few days early, when his former bandleader, Carlos Santana, paid him a surprise visit on Dec. 20.

cs-marcus-001Mr. Santana, an ICAP board member, tracked down Mr. Malone — a percussionist in the original Santana Blues Band of the mid-1960s, who had fallen on hard times and was now homeless on the streets of Oakland — after seeing him on a television news feature of which he was just a tangential figure.

With the help of the TV reporter covering the main story, the two reunited and pledged to re-establish their connection.
