A group conversation can unfold like a jazz performance with each participant taking his or her moment to solo with verve before seamlessly rejoining the group effort.
Such was the case on September 18, when a group of jazz luminaries gathered on Zoom to discuss the musical wisdom of the late, great Miles Davis. ICAP co-presidents, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, who received much of their early jazz education as valued sidemen to Miles, shared entertaining and instructive anecdotes with members of Mr. Shorter’s latest quartet — Danilo Péres, piano; John Patitucci, bass; and Brian Blades, drums — and guest drummer, Terri Lyne Carrington.
The conversation was part of the fifth of five weekly concerts with Mr. Shorter and his quintet for the SFJAZZ organization’s “Fridays at Five” series.
